How to get started with Google Webmaster
First the basics, you need to have a google account to be able to use Google Webmaster tool. Once you login to your Google Webmaster account you can start adding the sites you own(Only add the site you own).

Once you add a site you need to verify that you are the owner of the same. Being an owner here means that you have either access to the server where it is hosted(and you can keep a file there) or you can modify the source files and add an attribute in a file on server. The two ways to verify are :-
1) Adding a html file to server root directory with a name google will generate
2) Adding a meta tag in the homepage of your homepage.

Use the Google webmaster verification that suits you. If you are non technical user i would recommend just adding a blank html file with the name google asks in your webroot directory.
Once you have added the file click the verify button at the bottom left. The file or the meta tag must have been added before you do so. Its a good idea to visit the URL google expects the file at to ensure its really present.
Once its verified you will start seeing a green tick (see the first image row 1) at the dashboard.
Now you are all set to get meaningful insights from Google Webmaster. Read my next post on How to use Google Webmaster for SEO of your site.
